Tamil Vaishnava Saints who composed the Divya Prabandham - திவ்யப்பிரபந்தம் இயற்றிய வைஷ்ணவ பக்தர்கள்
ஆழ்வார்கள் (ஆழ்ந்து + அறிவோர் = "ஆழமாக அறிந்தவர்கள்") என்பது திருமாலை தமிழில் பாடிய 12 வைஷ்ணவ பக்தர்கள். இவர்கள் கி.பி. 6-9ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் வாழ்ந்தவர்கள். இவர்கள் பாடிய 4000 பாசுரங்கள் நாலாயிர திவ்யப்பிரபந்தம் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன.
The 12 Alvars are Tamil Vaishnava saints who wrote the Divya Prabandham (4000 sacred verses) praising Lord Vishnu at 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples). Their compositions are considered on par with the Vedas in the Sri Vaishnava tradition and are called "Dravida Veda" (Tamil Vedas).

பூதத்தாழ்வார் · Mahabalipuram

One of the earliest Alvars, contemporary of Poigai and Peyalvar.
பேயாழ்வார் · Mylapore (Chennai)
Works: Moondam Thiruvandhadi (100 verses)
The three early Alvars met mysteriously at Thirukovilur.
திருமழிசையாழ்வார் · Thirumalisai
Works: Nanmugan Thiruvanthadi, Thiruchchanda Viruttam
Born to a Brahmin father and lower-caste mother. Initially a Jain and Buddhist before embracing Vaishnavism.
நம்மாழ்வார் · Thirukkurugur (Alwarthirunagari)
Works: Thiruvaimozhi (1102 verses) - most important
Greatest of the Alvars. His Thiruvaimozhi is the Tamil equivalent of the Sanskrit Upanishads. Silent from birth, began speaking through divine intervention.
மதுரகவி ஆழ்வார் · Thirukkolur
Works: Kanninun Siruthambu (11 verses)
Devoted entirely to Nammalvar rather than directly to Vishnu. A model of devotion to a guru.
குலசேகர ஆழ்வார் · Thiru Vanchi Kalam (Kerala)
Works: Perumal Thirumoli, Mukundamala
A Chera king who gave up his kingdom for devotion. Known for drama-style bhakti.
பெரியாழ்வார் · Srivilliputhur
Works: Periyalvar Thirumoli, Thiruppallandu
Father of Andal. Found her as an infant under a tulasi plant. His Thiruppallandu is sung at the start of every Divya Prabandham recitation.
ஆண்டாள் · Srivilliputhur
Works: Thiruppavai (30 verses), Nachiyar Thirumoli (143 verses)
The ONLY female Alvar. Daughter of Periyalvar. Composed Thiruppavai - sung during the entire month of Margazhi. She "married" Lord Vishnu (Ranganathar) at Srirangam.

A chieftain who funded Srirangam temple renovation. Most prolific Alvar with 6 works including Periya Thirumoli.
திருப்பாணாழ்வார் · Uraiyur
Works: Amalanadhipiran (10 verses)
Born to a Panar (musician) caste, traditionally considered low-caste. Was not allowed into the temple due to caste but was carried in on the shoulders of a Brahmin devotee by divine command. His 10 verses describe Ranganathar from feet to crown.
தொண்டரடிப்பொடியாழ்வார் · Thirumandangudi
Works: Thirumaalai, Thiruppalliyeluchi
Known for humble devotion. His name means "dust of the feet of servants of Vishnu." Composed morning hymns (Thiruppalliyeluchi) to wake Lord Ranganathar.
நாலாயிர திவ்யப்பிரபந்தம் 4000 பாசுரங்களை கொண்டது. இதில் 108 திவ்யதேசங்களைப் பற்றி பாடல்கள் உள்ளன - 105 பாரதத்தில், 1 நேபாளத்தில் (முக்திநாத்), 2 திவ்யலோகத்தில் (வைகுண்டம் மற்றும் திருப்பாற்கடல்). ஆழ்வார்களின் பாடல்கள் ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ கோயில்களில் தினமும் பாடப்படுகின்றன.
