ஆண்டாள் (கோதை என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்) 8ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரே ஒரு பெண் ஆழ்வார். பன்னிரு ஆழ்வார்களில் ஒருவர். திருப்பாவை மற்றும் நாச்சியார் திருமொழி என்ற இரண்டு நூல்களை இயற்றினார்.
Andal (also known as Kothai) is the only female among the twelve Alvar saints. Born in Srivilliputhur (Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu), she was found as an infant in a garden under a tulasi plant by the Alvar Periyalvar, who raised her as his daughter. She is unique in Tamil devotional literature for her intensely personal and romantic approach to God-love.
ஆண்டாள் சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே திருமாலிடம் தீவிர பக்தி கொண்டிருந்தார். தன்னை திருமாலுக்கு மண மகளாக கருதி, தினமும் தோட்டத்தில் பூமாலை கோர்த்து திருமாலுக்கு அர்ப்பணித்தார். ஒரு நாள் அவர் மாலையை தன்னுடன் அணிந்துகொண்டதாக புராண கதை சொல்கிறது.
திருப்பாவை 30 பாசுரங்கள் கொண்டது. மார்கழி மாத நோன்பு பற்றியது. தோழிகளுடன் காலை வேளையில் திருமாலை வழிபட செல்வதை வர்ணிக்கிறது. ஸ்ரீவைஷ்ணவ கோயில்களில் தினமும் அதிகாலையில் பாடப்படுகிறது.
Thiruppavai describes the Pavai Nombu (Vrat/Vow) observed in the month of Margazhi. Andal and her companions (sakhis) wake up early, bathe, and go to worship Vishnu. These 30 pasurams are a masterpiece of devotional poetry and are sung daily in Vaishnava temples across Tamil Nadu. Periyalvar's "Thiruppallandu" is sung before Thiruppavai.

Nachiyar Thirumoli (143 verses) expresses Andal's intense longing for union with Vishnu. She speaks as a bride awaiting her divine bridegroom. The poetry is remarkably intimate and anticipates the "bridal mysticism" found in many religious traditions worldwide.
