Who was Thiruvalluvar?

திருவள்ளுவர் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய அறிஞர். திருக்குறள் என்ற 1330 குறள்களை இயற்றிய ஒப்பற்ற கவிஞர். இவர் "தெய்வப் புலவர்", "நாயனார்" என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.

Thiruvalluvar is the ancient Tamil poet who authored the Thirukkural, one of the greatest works of world literature. His Thirukkural is a collection of 1330 couplets (kurals) on ethics, wealth, and love that transcends religious, caste, and cultural boundaries. It has been translated into more than 80 languages.

திருவள்ளுவரின் காலம் பற்றி அறிஞர்களிடம் கருத்துவேறுபாடு உள்ளது. பெரும்பாலும் கி.மு. 31ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு முதல் கி.பி. 5ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு வரையிலான காலகட்டம் குறிப்பிடப்படுகிறது.

• Ambedkarite view: Dr. Ambedkar praised Thiruvalluvar as a social reformer whose teachings on equality predate modern movements

திருக்குறளில் கடவுள் அதிகாரம் (Praise of God) இருந்தாலும், எந்த ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட மதத்தையும் குறிக்காமல் பிரபஞ்சத்தின் ஆதிசக்தியை வர்ணிக்கிறது - இதனால்தான் எல்லா மதத்தவரும் திருக்குறளை தங்கள் நூல் என்று ஏற்கின்றனர்.
