The Ten Commandments were given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai (Exodus 20). They form the moral foundation for both Judaism and Christianity, covering humanity's duties to God (first 4) and to fellow humans (last 6).
"You shall have no other gods before me." - Exodus 20:3
The first and greatest commandment. God alone is worthy of ultimate loyalty and worship. This is called monotheism - belief in one God.
"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth below." - Exodus 20:4
God is spirit and cannot be fully represented by physical objects. This commandment warns against reducing God to something made by human hands.
"You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God." - Exodus 20:7
God's name is holy. Using it carelessly, in oaths, curses, or empty speech dishonors God. This commandment calls for reverence in all speech about God.
"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy." - Exodus 20:8
God rested on the 7th day after creation. Humans need rest and worship. Christians observe Sunday (Lord's Day) as the day of worship.
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land." - Exodus 20:12
The first commandment with a promise. Honoring parents reflects our relationship with God who is our heavenly Father. Family is the foundation of society.
"You shall not murder." - Exodus 20:13
Human life is sacred because humans are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27). This commandment protects the sanctity of life. Jesus extended it to include anger (Matthew 5:21-22).
"You shall not commit adultery." - Exodus 20:14
Marriage is sacred. Faithfulness in marriage reflects God's faithfulness to His people. Jesus extended this to include lustful thoughts (Matthew 5:27-28).
"You shall not steal." - Exodus 20:15
Respecting others' property. Also implies working honestly for one's needs. Applied broadly to tax evasion, fraud, exploitation, and plagiarism.
"You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor." - Exodus 20:16
Truth is sacred. Lying, slander, gossip, and deception all violate this commandment. Especially about others in legal or social contexts.
"You shall not covet your neighbor's house, wife, servants, animals, or anything else." - Exodus 20:17
The only commandment about internal desire. Coveting leads to breaking all other commandments. Contentment with what God provides is the solution.
"நான் நியாயப்பிரமாணத்தை அழிக்க வரவில்லை, நிறைவேற்ற வந்தேன்." - மத்தேயு 5:17
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." - Matthew 5:17
Jesus summarized all 10 commandments in two: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart... and love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:37-39) - the first 4 commandments relate to loving God; the last 6 to loving neighbors.
